This book is about surviving crime and terrorism in the United States. The book takes you through surviving a burglary, armed robbery, rape, shooting and other violent attacks. The final two chapters focus on terrorism and how to survive a terrorist attack.

In "Survival" Lieutenant Philbrick tells stories from his 22 years of law enforcement experience to make his points. Most of them are from his personal history and others are from his tenure in the police department. Each story reinforces a point.

Also, Walter reveals a secret that he has kept silent for more than 10 years. "One of my investigators was following the 911 terrorists here in south Florida for months". "I met with the FBI and gave them information on the terrorist cell located in Hollywood, Florida". "The FBI did nothing with the information". The terrorist cell they were following, were the terrorist hijackers who flew the first airplane into the world trade center. Thus, 3 months later the unfortunate 911 attacks occurred and it could have been stopped.
